The synopsis of this novel was pretty vague, so I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect when I first started it. However, this book turned out to be one of the most fantastic books I’ve read this year! Pretty Girl Thirteen is dark, creepy, intense, scary, gritty and downright incredible. I finished reading this book in two sittings; I was so drawn into the story that I found it really hard to put it down and couldn’t wait to pick it back up again. I’ve honestly never read anything like this novel before, it was so intense and heart-wrenching that it shook me to my very core.

One minute thirteen year old Angie Chapman is camping in the woods with a group of friends, and the next minute she’s standing at the end of her road. Angie has scars around her wrists and ankles and her parents are crying and telling her she’s been missing, presumed dead for three years. Angie can’t remember anything from the past three years, and is more than a little confused. However, there are people who can tell her what’s happened to her, who could tell her every, terrifying detail. The only problem is that they’re locked up inside her mind.

I was worried when I first started reading Pretty Girl Thirteen, that Angie’s other personalities or ‘alters’ would slow down the novel and make it generally confusing and hard to follow. However, this was definitely not the case at all! I loved how only little bits of information were revealed to Angie and the reader, being able to let everyone absorb the terrifying and intense information at a slower pace – rather than bombarding you with it all at once. As the novel progresses, we learn about what really happened to Angie over the last three years and piece together the memories she has locked away. Every new piece of information Angie remembers is completely ground breaking and constantly twists and changes your expectations of the novel.

I really loved Angie’s character – she was a really strong, smart and interesting protagonist to read about. I thought it was amazing how Angie managed to adapt to her new life – her mind was still thirteen years old, but her body was that of a sixteen year old. Obviously, Angie was completely freaked out by the entire situation, but acted really mature about everything and tried to cooperate with everyone. I loved how Angie didn’t behave all angst filled and angry at the world - but was sweet, kind and funny - I think her character was perfectly formed; if she was a person in real life, I’d love to be her friend.

Liz Coley writes about a variety of very sensitive and upsetting topics throughout this novel, but they were all handled with great care. Liz’s writing style is very raw, yet beautiful and amazing at the same time. I felt such a different array of emotions whilst reading this book, with every page; things kept getting darker, creepier and more sinister. Yet there were the higher moments, with Angie feeling such stronger and friendlier emotions – all of these mixed together to create an emotional rollercoaster ride you definitely won’t forget. I raved and talked about this book to my mum so much that she thought she might enjoy it and ended up buying herself a kindle copy! My mum doesn’t read YA books, but she has really loved reading Pretty Girl Thirteen.

Overall, I was completely blown away by this book – and even now I’m still finding myself lost for words. I believe the 5/5 star rating I gave it was well and truly earned, and if I could give it more – I definitely would. Pretty Girl Thirteen is a must read for everyone, whether you’re a teenager or an adult - I can’t recommend it highly enough! I also can’t wait to read more by Liz Coley; she’s an outstanding author that I’ll be definitely keeping tabs on in the future.

Quotes
Angie rubbed her face into Mom’s shoulder. “Do you think I’ll ever remember?”
For a long moment, Mom was silent. Angie pulled back and caught the tortured expression on her face, the mourning in her eyes, a split second before she fixed her expression.
Finally, Mom answered. “For three long years, all I’ve wanted was to know what happened to you. Now ... I don’t honestly know if I want you to remember.” - Page 45.

Angie released a huge, irritated sigh. “Fine. I get your point. I wish they’d all just tell you what they know. They’re like ghosts, hanging around with unfinished business on earth. I wish they’d just spill their guts and move on. Get out of town. I don’t need them anymore. I don’t want them!” Her voice rose again. - Page 128.

“Do you want to put up in a hotel for a few days so they can’t stake out on your front lawn?”
Mom laughed wickedly. “I’ll set up the lawn sprinklers. Let’s see them try.” She would, too.
I could see her turning the hoses on all their expensive video equipment. - Page 316.

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Hey Book Nerds! :D How are you all doing today? :) I'm doing well. :) I continued reading more of Partials last night, and I'm over 100 pages in and I love it! I know I said I wasn't sure about it yesterday, but I think it was just a bit of a slow start and it's really gotten going now. ^.^ I'm so eager to see what'll happen next. I'm also still working hard on my new coding and layout for the blog, it's taking much longer than I expected. My coding skills are a little rusty and not as good as they were five or six years ago. xD However, I'm not letting that deter me and I'm powering through! :D That's it for today - I hope you all have a great day. ^.^

*Squeals like a little kid on Christmas Day* I'm SO, SO, SO excited about the release of this book! :O I've been seeing it around on peoples blogs and everything for months and months now, but I'm only just now getting round to featuring it on mine. Even though the synopsis doesn't give much away - I think it looks like an incredible book. :D I WANT IT NOW! D: As you all probably know by now, I'm a huge fan of thriller/mystery YA novels - they're so fun to read. ^.^ As for the cover; I do like it, but I'm not that keen on the white dots all over it, if the background didn't have them on, I think it'd look perfect. Oh well, we can't everything. :P What do you guys think of the looks of this book, have you heard of it before? :) Let me know! ^.^

Teaser Tuesday #32

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly book meme hosted by MizB from Should Be Reading. Grab your current read, open to a random page and share two “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page - remember, no spoilers!

Hey Book Nerds! :D How are you all doing today? :) It's such a miserable day today, it's been constantly raining since I woke up and it’s just not stopped. I don't think the sun even bothered coming out today. xD Anyway, I finished reading Pretty Girl Thirteen by Liz Coley yesterday - and oh my god - it was such an AMAZING book! My review will be posted soon, and hopefully my 100 followers giveaway as well! My extra copy of Pretty Girl Thirteen is up for grabs. ^.^ I keep saying I'll be posting the giveaway soon, but I've been really busy and haven't managed to do it - but I will soon, I promise! :D I hope you've all had a great weekend. :)

Teasers

This was the third birth this week, and the third death; it was more important to record the death, and to learn from it - to prevent, if not the next one, or the hundredth, or the thousandth. To find a way, somehow, to help a human child survive.

by Dan Wells.

I'm only about 27 pages into this book at the moment, and it hasn't blown me away yet. However, I've heard so many great things about it that I'm really excited to continue to read it and see if I believe it's worth all the hype. :P As for the cover, I think it's totally awesome! I love the photo shots of just the back of someone on covers - they can let your imagination wander about how the main character looks like. :) Have you read Partials? Let me know! ^.^

What are your teasers for this Tuesday? Leave me a comment or a link to your blog post and I'll be sure to check it out! :D Happy Reading. (:

Hey book nerds! :D How are you all doing today? Have you had a great week? :D I want to start off by apologising for all the weird changed that are going on in my blog at the moment. ;_; I'm currently recoding the whole lot, and there will be an altered and slightly different layout once I'm finished. It's taking longer than I expected unfortunately, because, for some weird reason all of my coding is messed up. o.O I just wanted to let you know the reason why things are changing, moving or disappearing. xD Lastly, I finished reading Night School by C.J. Daugherty last night - and I really enjoyed it! I gave it a 4/5 star rating because some things in the book really did bug me, and I didn't like the main character all that much. Overall though, it was really good - and I really recommend it! I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel. ^.^ I hope you've all had a great week. :D

Title: Dead To You.
Author: Lisa McMann.
Publication Date: May 2nd, 2013.
Publisher: Scholastic.
Format: Paperback, 288 pages.
Source: ARC Provided By Publisher.
My Rating:

Ethan was abducted from his front yard when he was just seven years old. Now, at sixteen, he has returned to his family. It’s a miracle…at first. Then the tensions start to build, and his family starts falling apart all over again.

If only Ethan could remember something, anything, about his life before, he'd be able to put the pieces back together. But there's something that's keeping his memory blocked. Something unspeakable...

Where on earth do I start this review?! Dead to You was such a fantastic book, I’m literally so overwhelmed by the emotion and pain that was conveyed throughout this book that my mind has gone blank. The synopsis of this novel was vague and not overly informative – so I started reading this book with not very high expectations. I was expecting Dead to You to be a slightly emotional read, with a basic, not that gripping plot. I didn’t think there would be a whole lot to work with regarding the basic plot line - however, I was completely wrong!

The DeWilde’s family was turned upside down 9 years ago when their 7 year old son, Ethan was kidnapped right from their front garden. Ethan was raised by a woman, who then proceeded to dump him in a group home a few years later. At 16 years old, Ethan is found and reunited with his parents, younger brother; Blake and a little sister he’s never met. Even though this should be an emotional, joyful and happy time, Ethan has gaps in his memory - secrets that have been locked away and that might tear his family apart.

Dead to You was a relatively short novel that I whizzed through in no time. Even though the novel takes off very quickly, where Ethan is finally going home, I thought that the first quarter of it was quite slow. Although once I had about 30 or so pages read, it really started to pick up. The chapters in the novel are quite short, sometimes only one or two pages per chapter. Normally, this would annoy me; mainly because when chapters end, the scenes generally jump. However, at the beginning of each chapter, the book would more or less continue on where it was left off at the end of the previous chapter.

Ethan’s character was really interesting and quite frankly – I loved him. I loved how he still managed to act like a normal teenager even after all he’d been through. There was something about Ethan’s character that made it hard to not like him. I’ve not read a whole lot of novels in the perspective of a male character – and it was so much fun to read about Ethan’s thoughts and outlook on life. I also loved how Cami, his childhood friend, managed to spark his teenage love and yearning. It was amazing to watch their relationship develop and progress. However, I did find it a little bit annoying about how obsessed Ethan became with Cami. I know that he’s a teenage boy, but he’s only just come back to his family after nine years of being apart. I really think he needed to sort out his priorities.

All of the characters in this novel were very well developed and interesting to read about – especially Blake, Ethan’s younger brother. I didn’t particularly like Blake, mainly because he was so angst filled and acting like an idiot throughout most of the book. I also thought the family tension in this novel was handled incredibly well, I felt I could almost feel it rolling in waves off the pages. The situation that the DeWilde’s family were in was obviously very stressful, emotional and a sensitive subject. I think that it’s a very difficult situation to write about, but Lisa McMann managed to create the environment really well and managed not to over or under do it.

The ending of this novel had the most frustrating and crazy, yet amazing and perfect end. On one hand, it was the perfect ending, especially if the book turns out to be a standalone novel. However, on the other hand, I NEED to know MORE! I think Lisa McMann took a big risk making the book end the way it did, mainly because I’ve read a few reviews that say it lowered their rating of the book. This was not my opinion at all, and I think it was great whether it turns out to be a standalone novel or not.

Overall I thought this book was a really great read. It took me a great deal of time to decide to rate this 4/5 stars or 5/5 stars. In the end I settled for the 4/5 star rating, mainly because; although I really did enjoy this book – it was not without its faults. But I've not come across a book without any faults at all in my entire time of reading. I really did enjoy reading Dead to You, and Lisa McMann’s writing is beautiful and very relatable. I can’t wait to read more from her in the future!

Quotes
And then they’re kissing. He’s leaning back against the bus and she’s leaning into him. And I--I’m suddenly doubled up in hysterics, laughing uncontrollably, with a crowd all around me, feeling like a total psycho loser and unable to stop it, so I drop down to one knee. Start tying my shoe.
Gasping and laugh-crying down at the snow-packed cement as people bang into me, their knees catching my kidneys and shoulders and digging a little harder than they need to, because I’m in their way.

After Dad goes to bed, I start going through the photos, pulling out all the ones I like. I think I’m going to make a collage for my bedroom. I lay out all the photos on the pool table and arrange them the way I want them, Mama and Dad and Blake and Me, and I get this lump in my throat.
Because I want that.

I doze for a while, and then I hear Gracie coming down the stairs again. I open one eye and she sets something down by my head and tiptoes back upstairs. I sit up and look at it. It’s her lunch box. I pick it up and turn it over in my hands. And then I open it up. It’s lunch, A bologna, butter, and potato chip sandwich, a granola bar, a cheese stick, and a juice box.
And a folded piece of paper. I unfold it. It’s a drawing of the two of us in the living room, Gracie standing on my knees, playing elevator. And it kills me. It really does.

Hey Book Nerds! ^.^ How are you all doing today? :) I'm doing well, thanks! :P I'm nearly half way through reading Night School at the moment, and I'm really loving it so far - it's SO good! :) As I said yesterday, I'm not all that keen on the main character, Allie - she's just a bit too immature for my liking - but everything else is just awesome. :3 Lastly, I'd like to say - I've reached 100+ followers! :D I'll be holding my giveaway, hopefully, on Saturday - so don't forget to check that out and enter if you want. ^.^ I hope you're all having a great week so far. :)

Title: Conjured.
Author: Sarah Beth Durst.
Expected Publication: August 27th, 2013.
Publisher: Walker Children's.
Format: Hardback, 368 pages.

Eve has a new home, a new face, and a new name—but no memories of her past. She’s been told that she's in a witness protection program. That she escaped a dangerous magic-wielding serial killer who still hunts her. The only thing she knows for sure is that there is something horrifying in her memories the people hiding her want to access—and there is nothing they won’t say—or do—to her to get her to remember.

At night she dreams of a tattered carnival tent and buttons being sewn into her skin. But during the day, she shelves books at the local library, trying to not let anyone know that she can do things—things like change the color of her eyes or walk through walls. When she does use her strange powers, she blacks out and is drawn into terrifying visions, returning to find that days or weeks have passed—and she’s lost all short-term memories. Eve must find out who and what she really is before the killer finds her—but the truth may be more dangerous than anyone could have ever imagined.

EEEK! This book so absolutely amazing! I saw it on someone else's Waiting On Wednesday post last week (I'm really sorry I can't remember who!), and I completely fell in love with it. WHY do all the amazing looking books have to take so long to be released? It's really not fair... ;_; As for the cover, I think it's really cool. I love the simplicity of it and the typography is gorgeous. :3 What do you guys think of the looks of this book, have you heard of it before? :) Let me know! ^.^
